Over 20,000 racegoers revelled in the Channel Seven Ipswich Cup celebrations last Saturday.

Ipswich Turf Club General Manager Brett Kitching said the community of Ipswich was treated to perfect weather, quality racing and entertainment at this year’s event.

“The community again displayed excellent behaviour in another show of spirit and pride in our city,” Brett said.

“The Queensland Police Service again confirmed a minimum of incidents with just two arrests across the course on the day.

“The final gate tally was 20,074 and despite the huge crowds every year we are really pleased to see the overall incidents declining over the past decade.”

The day includes a mix of horse racing and music with the Ipswich Cup Infield Festival continuing to grow each year.

“The 5,000 strong crowd on the Infield was treated to a strong line-up of DJs with headline act Mashd N Kutcher making a huge impact on the crowd,” Brett added.

The racing also attracted a quality line-up with Melbourne Cup winning trainers and jockeys in the mix at the meeting.

The real highlight for the day was the Ipswich Cup and it was trainer Darren Weir’s Tradesman ridden by Dean Yendall who gave the crowd a thing to cheer about. It was a seesaw finish with the popular-named Tradesman getting ahead for the win by just a nose from First Crush.

Mr Kitching said plans were already in place for next year’s event, with demolition for $13m upgrades to start in August and expected to finish in May.
