Ipswich Preview 18 January 2023

Ipswich Preview 18 January 2023

Date: 17-Jan-2023

Metropolitan racing heads to Ipswich this Wednesday for an eight-race card. The rail moves from the 5m position where it was at Saturday’s meeting out to 10m. With mostly fine weather forecast, the track should be in the good range.

We’ve provided our thoughts on each race below.

Race 1 - 1:38PM FOLLOW @IPSWICHTURFCLUB QTIS Two-Year-Old Maiden Plate (800 METRES)

Speed: Tough to mad the speed with so many inexperienced two-year-olds involved.

Gear Changes: Sunday Mail (2) Blinkers (Near Side) FIRST TIME, Gelded, Standard Bit FIRST TIME

Sunday Mail (2) was a well-supported $2 favourite when debuting at Eagle Farm in a Saturday race at Eagle Farm. Unfortunately, he did everything wrong with him running off the track on the turn the final straw. He has since been gelded and gets a blinker on the near side. He won a trial easily leading into this. From barrier 2, Boris Thornton should give him a great run.

Mishani Mystique (7) resumes here following an 11-week break. She was last seen finishing off well for third behind Mishani Rengade at Eagle Farm over 1000m. Les Ross has a few horses in this so it’s always a good guide to which has a better chance by seeing which has Jimmy Orman riding. He’s on this filly.

Mishani Metallic (6) was only just behind Mishani Mystique at her last start. She settled on speed that day so Adin Thompson will more than likely try to do that here first-up.

Big Boy Ben (1) is on debut here for Helen Page. He’s had two trials in preparation for this with the most recent resulting in an easy win. He showed good early speed, so I’d expect Michael Cahill to make full use of barrier 3 and go forward.

On Top Selection: Sunday Mail (2)

Race 2 - 2:13PM TAB BENCHMARK 75 Handicap (800 METRES)

Speed: There should be no surprise that there will be good speed in this scamper.

Sequesay (7) sat just off a hot speed over this course and distance last start before running on well along the fence to finish a narrow second. She finished ahead of Boogielu that day and meets that horse better at the weights. Ben Thompson replaces the apprentice and will give her every chance from barrier 4.

Boogielu (4) is an out and out 800m specialist. He’s won five of six over the trip including last start here. He flew out of the gates to lead and was never troubled, dashing clear for a two-length win in quick time. He does prefer tracks with the sting out of them.

Liza With A Zee (3) will find this easier than recent races where she has competed in stronger Saturday races. She won her only previous start at Ipswich. She’s a speedy mare and will have to be as she’s drawn the outside gate and could be posted deep.

The Tenor (1) resumes here and does his best work fresh, winning five of nine first-up. He warmed up for this with a nice trial win at Toowoomba where she showed a swift set of hooves.

On Top Selection: Sequesay (7)

Race 3 - 2:48PM SIRROMET Maiden Plate (1350 METRES)

Speed: I Am Pearl from the inside gate should push forward. Neoclassicism and Double Oh Seven will provide company.

Gear Changes: Chicago Field (1) Gelded, Hidden Saint (4) Blinkers FIRST TIME, Gelded, Talantino (11)  Bandages (Front) FIRST TIME, Where Ya Bean (17) Blinkers OFF FIRST TIME, Bubble Cheeker (Near Side) OFF FIRST TIME, Cheekers OFF FIRST TIME, Ear Muffs (Pre-Race Only) FIRST TIME, Lugging Bit FIRST TIME, Winkers FIRST TIME

Prophets De’vine (10) settled well back on debut at the Sunshine Coast before coming with a powerful finishing burst to come second by half a length. She’ll be fitter second-up and the rise to 1350m suits. She’s drawn wide but she’ll more than likely get back anyway.

Glide On By (9) was held up last start at Eagle Farm but found the line once clear to finish third to Spill The Secret. Gets back in her races so tends to find trouble but with clear running she’ll fight out the finish with just 52kg on her back.

Neoclassicism (6) has finished second in three of four starts this preparation. Last start at Eagle Farm over 1400m, he raced on the speed but proved no match for Greylander and finished 3.5 lengths away in second. He’ll be prominent for Ben Thompson.

Mon Cadeau (2) should be reaching peak fitness third-up. He’s finished third in both starts back this preparation. Last start he worked home well but easily accounted for by Prophets De’vine.

On Top Selection: Prophets De’vine (10)

Race 4 - 3:23PM STROUD HOMES IPSWICH BENCHMARK 65 Handicap (2210 METRES)

Speed: Memoire Parfait should look to drive across from the outside gate and find a forward position. A few others like Guts ‘N’ Glory may look to hold it out.

Gear Changes: A Deel Of Humour (3) Nasal Strip FIRST TIME

A Deel Of Humour (3) rises in weight but drops considerably in class after finding the level of competition too rich last start in the Shoot Out at Doomben. At the start prior she did well to win at the Gold Coast over 2200m. That was a BM75 and she now finds herself in a BM65. From barrier 3, Lani Allen can settle on speed and give them something to run down.

Lets Torque A Deel (2) flew home to win two starts back over 2450m at Beaudesert. Last start he stepped up to BM78 company here over 2150m and worked home well but couldn’t catch the tearaway leader Hostage Of War settling for third. Will settle back from the wide gate but get home strong.

Bay Street (8) has been in ripping form this preparation, winning twice and placing second in three other races. Last start he came from last to win well at Murwillumbah over 2020m. This is a step up in grade but he’s in good form and draws to get an economical run for Boris Thornton.

Guts ‘N’ Glory (1) has struck winning form for the Gerans, winning his past two starts. He lived up to his name when proving too strong over 2000m at Warwick last start. He never runs a bad race but must lump a big weight in his metropolitan debut. Should race on the speed for GGG.

On Top Selection: A Deel Of Humour (3)

Race 5 - 3:58PM OPEN EVENING 2 FEBRUARY Class 1 Handicap (1710 METRES)

Speed: Pace looks moderate here and should be set by Zeitakuna.

Gear Changes: Mighty Willie (3) Blinkers FIRST TIME, Nose Roll OFF FIRST TIME, Magic Mikey (7) Bubble Cheeker (Off Side) FIRST TIME, Alpha Jane (11) Tongue Tie OFF FIRST TIME, Vancity (12) Barrier Blanket FIRST TIME

Mighty Willie (3) is having his first start since transferring from Chris Waller’s Sydney stable to the Gold Coast operation. He should find this an easier class of opposition after competing in BM64 and BM72 company at his two most recent starts. He brings a good level of fitness and blinkers go on for the first time. Jimmy Orman takes the ride.

Sibylla (8) won well over 1350m here three starts back. Since then, she has run on well but has been unable to catch the leader in two starts at the Gold Coast and Beaudesert. You could argue you she had excuses on both occasions. She looks well placed here and should enjoy a great run from the inside gate.

Tapildoodledo (4) has been freshend after finishing fourth in the Group 3 Grand Prix Stakes last start. His record doesn’t look flash on paper, but he has been racing in some good three-year-old races. The outside barrier is a concern.

Mishani Missile (5) broke his maiden status in good style at the Sunshine Coast last start before putting in a solid effort to finish third over 1600m last start. Drops in weight.

On Top Selection: Mighty Willie (3)

Race 6 - 4:33PM WWW.IEEC.COM.AU BENCHMARK 65 Handicap (1100 METRES)

Speed: There looks to be good speed engaged here with Top Bird, Campai, My Oddette and Controlocracy all capable of going forward.

Gear Changes: Campai (11) Tongue Tie FIRST TIME

Controlocracy (10) put her rivals to the sword when winning here by 2.3 lengths two starts back over this distance. Last start she hit the front in the straight at the Sunshine Coast but was run down late by Thatfeelsbetter. Brodie Loy has a good record with this filly and should be able to settle in a prominent position.

Inasec (5) was very good when just missing the win at Doomben over 1050m when first-up. That was a BM78 so will enjoy the class drop even with the 4.5kg weight rise. She’s won second-up before but draws poorly in a wide gate. If shegets luck, then will be right in the finish.

Derry Grove (3) won on debut at Canterbury two starts back before racing wide and finishing towards the tail last start. Has since trialed well and has moved to Matt Dunn’s Murwillumbah stable. Needs to overcome a wide gate but has ability.

Deepour (6) has raced well since joining Adam Campton. After a solid third at the Gold Coast first-up, he appreciated a good tempo to run on strongly and win at the Sunshine Coast last start. That should again be the case here.

On Top Selection: Controlocracy (10)

Race 7 - 5:11PM THE SHED COMPANY IPSWICH Class 2 Handicap (1200 METRES)

Speed: Centre Bounce will look to cross from a wide gate and lead. Dusty Diamond and Boodua Romance may offer opposition.

Gear Changes: Comrade Rosa (1) Visors OFF FIRST TIME, Ned's Gully (3) Blinkers OFF FIRST TIME, Jet Esprit (12) Tongue Tie FIRST TIME

Comrade Rosa (1) is having her first start for Tony Gollan after previously racing with John O’Shea in Sydney. She hasn’t had a great deal of luck in recent starts. Last start she was held up in the straight and went to the line untested. The start prior she was again held up but once clear she hit the line well to just miss on the Kensington. Both races were BM72s and she now finds herself in a Class 2.  A strong speed will help her cause.

Arcarius (11) attacked the line with gusto to win first-up at Eagle Farm, defeating Boodua Romance in the process. He’ll be fitter second-up and will appreciate the extra trip. This tipster was all over him at $10 at Eagle Farm but he draws wide here and will get back which isn’t ideal with the rail out 10m.

Boodua Romance (8) won debut at the Sunshine Coast before finding the front at Eagle Farm last start before being run down late to finish a close second. He’ll be better for the experiences third-up and should be prominent in the run.

Don’t Diss Around (4) resumed at Gatton last start and should have won if not for running about. He won his previous second-up race. This is tougher but looks to have some upside.

On Top Selection: Comrade Rosa (1)

Race 8 - 5:50PM THE BARN FAMILY RESTAURANT BENCHMARK 68 Handicap (1350 METRES)

Speed: Ain’t She Lovely and Seacole should ensure that there’s a good speed set.

Gear Changes: Patton (11) Ear Muffs (Pre-Race Only) FIRST TIME

Seacole (4) resumes here for David Vandyke. The four-year-old was formerly with Maher and Eustace in Victoria. Her form down there places her well in this company. In six starts over the trip, she never finished outside the top three. She was given a soft trial in preparation for this. Vandyke and Maloney strike at 34% when teaming up.

De Manara (5) went close to winning at Eagle Farm last start but was run down late by Petunia. He’s racing in good form with three placings this preparation so looks close to a win.

Spokesman (2) resumes following a yearlong break. He has run well fresh in the past and competed in stronger races than this. A recent trial where he worked home quite well should provide him with a decent level of fitness.

Ain’t She Lovely (7) controlled the race and proved too strong here last start over 1200m. With the rail out and a soft lead, she could again sneak a win.

On Top Selection: Seacole (4)
